Job Scope
The Laboratory Operations Supervisor will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating the Research & Development Laboratories to ensure compliance to all appropriate internal and external quality, regulatory, and safety guidelines. The position will provide leadership for laboratory operations including instrument maintenance, validation and monitoring; inventory control and purchasing of common laboratory materials and reagents; vendor coordination; laboratory space and workflow; and general laboratory cleanliness and organization. The position will also support research activities as needed and provide direction, training, and technical support to laboratory personnel. This position requires excellent organizational and communication skills, the ability to work independently, strong prioritization skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven collaborative environment.
Duties and Responsibilites
- Oversee and coordinate day-to-day laboratory operations for assay development and BSL-II laboratories, establishing priorities and ensuring laboratories are maintained for safe, efficient, and compliant operations.
- Lead laboratory equipment lifecycle activities, including qualification, calibration, verification, preventive maintenance, repair, relocation, and retirement; troubleshoot equipment issues and coordinate vendor services as needed.
- Maintain accurate and compliant documentation for laboratory equipment and activities, including calibration, verification, qualification, maintenance, and related quality records.
- Own laboratory purchasing and material-management processes, including common laboratory materials and reagent supplies, Purchase Requisitions/Purchase Orders, receiving, stocking, and organization of laboratory supplies.
- Maintain laboratory inventory and tracking systems to ensure traceability and availability of equipment, materials, and biological resources.
- Manage and coordinate third-party laboratory service providers and vendor activities, including service agreements, maintenance schedules, and resolution of equipment or service issues.
- Lead laboratory workflow and space-planning activities, including equipment and supply relocation, installation, and optimization in coordination with Facilities and other departments and user groups.
- Serve as the laboratory-side operational point of contact for Facilities and other support functions regarding laboratory space, equipment placement, access, and equipment-specific requirements.
- Interface across the organization and work closely with Quality Affairs, R&D, Manufacturing, Quality Control, Facilities, and other functional groups regarding laboratory priorities, projects, and deliverables.
- Support departmental administrative activities, including laboratory operating budgets, third-party vendor contracts, purchasing priorities, and logistical activities associated with R&D collaborations.
- Author, review, and maintain SOPs, work instructions, change orders, and other laboratory documentation to support compliant and standardized operations.
- Monitor laboratories for compliance with the company Quality Management System, safety requirements, and applicable laboratory standards; identify issues and coordinate appropriate corrective actions.
- Coordinate and prioritize laboratory operational requests and projects, balancing timelines, resources, equipment availability, and competing business needs.
- Provide day-to-day leadership, training, and technical support to laboratory personnel, including assigning operational activities and providing guidance on laboratory processes and equipment.
- Supervise assigned laboratory personnel, including establishing expectations, providing feedback, supporting development, and coordinating workload and priorities.
- Support internal and external audits and audit reporting as needed, including preparation of laboratory records and coordination of responses to findings.
- Drive continuous improvement of laboratory processes, systems, workflows, and resource utilization to improve efficiency, compliance, and laboratory readiness.
- Participate in laboratory research activities as needed, including generating, recording, and analyzing experimental data and maintaining laboratory notebooks.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience and Qualifications
- Associate's Degree in science or technical field with a minimum of 5 years related experience required OR Bachelor's Degree in a life science, engineering, or related field required with a minimum of 3 years of related experience.
- 3+ Years work experience in GLP/GMP laboratory with an understanding of documentation requirements preferred.
- 3+ Years work experience with process and equipment validation methodologies preferred.
- Experience coordinating laboratory operations, equipment service activities, purchasing, vendors, or cross-functional projects preferred.
- Experience providing day-to-day direction, training, or supervision to laboratory personnel preferred.
Training and Skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint programs.
- Highly organized with proven time management, prioritization, and project coordination skills.
- Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and make decisions with minimal supervision.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with proven ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and across functional groups.
- Ability to lead, train, and provide direction to laboratory personnel.
