Job Scope:
Responsible for evaluating applicable regulations; determining applicability to company operations; and implementation of procedures and policies to result in conformance with Environmental, Health and Safety regulations and the protection of the environment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage hazardous waste program to assure collection, storage, transportation and final disposal of hazardous waste is in compliance with local, state and federal environmental regulations.
- Prepare and submit hazardous waste license renewals.
- Evaluate waste chemicals and determine appropriate waste classification.
- Disclose hazardous waste to waste authorities.
- Arrange analysis and method of disposal for waste chemicals to include transportation and final disposition.
- Audit waste management transporters and facilities for compliance with regulations and the conditions of their licenses.
- Evaluate applicable regulations, determine applicability to DiaSorin’s hazardous waste program, and develop and implement procedures and policies to meet regulatory requirements.
- Represent the company during hazardous waste inspections.
- Manage worker compensation program to result in effective claim management and minimization of corporate worker compensation costs.
- Perform administrative functions to include submission of first report of injury, medical statements, and medical records to insurance carrier or administrator.
- Work with insurance company, employee, and local health care providers to assure employee receives appropriate care and expedient return to work.
- Develop, implement and assure compliance for chemical, biological and general safety policies and procedures to result in protection of employee safety.
- Identify hazards and conditions that may result in personal injury or company loss and develop methods and procedures to eliminate these hazards.
- Evaluate applicable regulations to include OSHA, DOT, EPA, ANSI, DEA and local requirements; determine applicability to DiaSorin’s safety program; and develop and implement procedures and policies to meet regulatory requirements.
- Represent the company during inspections involving OSHA, DOT, EPA, DEA and local regulatory agencies.
- Oversee corporate environmental microbial monitoring program to assure conformance with corporate and regulatory requirements.
- Review and develop microbial monitoring procedures to include air, water and surface monitoring.
- Review and develop corrective action limits for microbial monitoring to assure conformance with regulatory recommendations and manufacturing standards.
- Review product manufacturing documents and packaging/labeling to assure corporate and regulatory requirements are met.
- Review product labeling and packaging for conformance with domestic and international labeling and transportation standards.
- Review manufacturing procedures to include safety considerations, process and reagent changes to assure appropriate safety procedures are incorporated into manufacturing documents.
- Coordinate DiaSorin’s emergency response program to result in increased loss control in the event of an emergency.
- Develop and implement corporate emergency response procedures.
- Coordinate DiaSorin’s emergency response teams to include response to medical, radiation and chemical emergencies.
- Organize and execute emergency drills to include medical, spill, fire and tornado.
- Chair DiaSorin Safety Committee and facilitate regular meetings.
- Perform and document calibration and preventative maintenance needed to result in equipment that is in good working condition, in accordance with corporate policies and in compliance with GMP.
- Perform necessary calibrations on radiation detection equipment to meet GMP specifications.
- Maintain records of preventative maintenance in accordance with GMP.
- Perform minor repairs on equipment when necessary.
- Contact outside vendors to conduct major repairs and other preventative maintenance on equipment.
- Perform work in a safe manner consistent with DiaSorin’s health, safety and environmental policies and assume responsibility for personal safety and that of co-workers to result in a safe work environment for all employees and the protection of the environment and the community at large.
- Follow DiaSorin’s established procedures for the safe handling and disposal of hazardous, radioactive and infectious material.
- Participate in DiaSorin’s safety training programs and demonstrate competency in the use of Material Safety Data Sheets, chemical labeling, corporate emergency response procedures, and DiaSorin’s Health, Safety, and Environmental policies.
- Be aware of and understand the hazards specific to work area and follow appropriate safety precautions necessary to control them.
- Understand and utilize documentation protocols and accurately and legibly complete all documentation on time to result in a product/process history consistent with GMP requirements.
- Understand the appropriate Universal Operating Procedures (UOPs) pertaining to the work to be performed.
- Review, understand, and accurately complete in a timely fashion, documents such as procedures, forms, worksheets, and notebooks.
- Route, handle and/or store completed documentation appropriate for the work completed.
- Initiate Engineering Change Orders (ECO), Nonconformance Reports (NCR) and Deviations, as applicable.
- Follow DiaSorin’s established compliance procedures designed to ensure that all regulatory requirements are met; activities may include audits, documentation, and the understanding of the requirements of agencies such as OSHA, EPA, and FDA.
- Develop leadership competencies and foster an environment that results in a risk-taking, energetic, accountable work force that works together to fulfill corporate objectives.
- Promote open channels of communication throughout the organization through continual thoughtful and open communications.
- Actively participate in team meetings and acts as a resource to the group.

- Develop and deliver internal safety training programs to include Hazard Communication, Ergonomics, Lockout/Tagout, Forklift, Welding, and Radiation Safety training.
- Formally and informally lead training of others in areas of competencies where appropriate.
- Participate in formal and informal training required to increase skills to meet work expectations.
- Select, train, evaluate and develop employees to assure optimum motivation and retention of staff.
- Conduct coaching sessions on a regular basis with staff to discern their work, their progress on defined goals, their strengths and opportunities for improvement.
- Prepare and conduct the performance assessment delivering a candid and respectful discussion about results.
- Perform review process according to corporate guidelines and complete on a timely basis.
- Provide training and development to employees to assure their continual growth in the acquisition and demonstration of needed skills, knowledge and abilities.
- Strategically identify characteristics and skill sets needed in future staff additions.
- Recruit and select employees for open positions, achieving a balance between position/role requirements and the individual skills, knowledge and abilities of employees.
- Establish and communicate responsibilities and expectations to employees to assure mutual understanding of results expected.
- Recommend, develop and implement plans that support the achievement of the strategic business operations of the company.
- Develop systems and processes and show ability to integrate them into the business operations in such a way that they positively impact our business objectives.
- Work across departments/groups to assure that mutually dependent business strategies are integrated so that planning is coordinated and cohesive effort is allowed.
- Proactively maximize resources (time, materials, effort) and work to identify ineffective systems and provide the leadership for improvement.
Education, Experience, and Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety Management or equivalent
- CSP or working toward desired
- 8+ years related experience working with chemical, radioactive, and biological materials
- Knowledge of Health, Safety, and Environmental regulations to include OSHA, EPA, and DOT/IATA
- Knowledge of and skill in using Microsoft Word for windows and Excel; familiarity with Google Suite
- Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
- Problem solving ability such as the ability to diagnose problems by separating essential from non-essential variables
- Knowledge of budgeting process and the elements of a budget
- Knowledge of capital expense request process such as writing the justification for the purchase of a new piece of equipment
- Advanced skills in Math
- Exposure to Toxic and Corrosive Chemicals
- Exposure to Human Source Materials (BioHazards)
- May lift up to 50 pounds
- May need to stand, or sit for an extended period of time throughout the workday.
- Ability to Smell (Respirator Users) and Ability to Distinguish Color (Label Inspection)
- Must be able to wear the proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
- i.e. Chemical Resistant Clothing and Gloves, and Disposable Clothing and Shoe Covers
- Be familiar with the use of special equipment
- i.e. Air Sampling Equipment, and Radiation Measurement Equipment.
